About

Hey! I’m Dave

I’m a lifelong artist - born and raised in downtown Ottawa.

I love painting contemporary landscapes with big colourful skies, sparkling lakes, shady trees and snowy drifts.

I aim to capture the tranquility and nobility of Canada’s flora, fauna and wildlife.

Exhibits

Beginning in my teens I participated regularly in local exhibits such as Art in the Park in the Glebe (now The New Art Festival), Art in Strathcona Park and Art in our Gardens. I’ve participated in countless community art and craft shows over the years and displayed work at numerous local bars and restaurants.

Events

The most fun events are where I get to paint live! For years, I’ve participated in an annual charity event called Martini Madness. It raises funds for Crohns and Colitis. I paint while martinis are flowing and at the end of the night, my piece is auctioned off. My brother is a musician with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. He’s always on the big stage in front of an audience. As a visual artist, I work quietly in my home studio. I don’t have a musical bone in my body, so I look forward to the occasions where, like my brother, I get to perform in front of a crowd!

I also love participating in Italian week on Preston St. in Ottawa’s Little Italy. For the last few years, I’ve set up my easel in front of Santini gallery and painted in front of the parade of people flooding the streets. Interacting with the community is so fun! I especially love seeing the look of wonder when children watch me paint.

Gallery Representation

My work has been sold by Koyman galleries, Santini Gallery and others and my paintings can be found in happy homes from North America to New Zealand.

Publications

I’ve written articles for the Glebe Report, a local community newspaper. My art has even been featured on the cover twice! I’ve also been featured in Neighbours of the Glebe magazine.

Growing up with a keen interest in art and architecture, my articles usually follow that theme. I’ve written about historic sites in the Glebe, famous builders and architects who built in the area in the late 19th to early 20th century. I also wrote a series profiling local artists, writers, photographers, and creators about how their homes reflected their art.

Outside the Studio

I’m a big time Glebite. I was born and raised in the Glebe in Ottawa. It’s a historic neighbourhood in downtown Ottawa with beautiful heritage houses, friendly neighbours, and shaded tree lined streets. It has almost everything you could need, from shops and restaurants, to a movie theatre and football stadium. And of course, the famous UNESCO designated Rideau Canal for winter skating or summer canoeing. I love going to football and hockey games with friends. My cheering face was even on the season tickets and used in other advertising for the CFL’s Ottawa Redblacks #GlebeFamous

For nearly 25 years I’ve been regularly visiting Lac McGregor in nearby Quebec. Whether going to my family’s cottage or visiting friends on the lake, I’ve had endless inspiration for my paintings. I’m inspired by hiking through the woods, kayaking at dusk or snowshoeing across the frozen lake. I love a good weekend adventure with my partner (and fellow artist!) Jasmine. Whether it’s off to Chateau Montebello or Mont Tremblant for some glorious fall hikes or exploring the small towns of Lanark County and the Frontenac, there’s always something to do within a 2hr drive!

Collaborations

I’m the co-creator of Global Collabs with Mark Ryan. We have worked together for years collaborating on fun and creative art projects that encourage engagement and interaction with our followers.

Mark and I have been friends since high school. We met in Bhat Boy’s art class while he was preparing his portfolio for the BFA degree program at the University of Ottawa. After graduating with his BFA, Mark attended teacher’s college at Queens University in Kingston. He then took teaching positions at private schools in Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi. He launched an apparel brand in Hong Kong, dated a celebrity, hosted a tv show and won a few 10km races. He now lives in Abu Dhabi with his family and assorted pets and continues to teach art. He works regularly with the Louvre Abu Dhabi, organizing special exhibits, events, and camps.

Mark and I have always bounced artistic ideas off of each other. We finally collaborated on a show at Santini Gallery a few years ago called Beautiful Possibilities. That show evolved into Global Collabs. In our first series, we printed a limited set of posters and then drew and painted skulls, flowers and crowns on them. We gave them to travellers who dead dropped them all across the world, from the Middle East, Europe, Asia, the Carribean, and even Easter Island. Lucky locals found these posters and they now adorn their homes. Series two launched as Covid raged, so the posters were given out to local friends in a weekly draw.

Series three is currently in the works and will launch in summer of 2023.
